You will be given 1 year time from the date of your medical tests or police certificates, which occur during the processing of your residence visa application. If you deduct part of the official processing time, you will generally be left with 8 to 10 months to land in New Zealand.

The applicant should travel to New Zealand within the validity of the visa. Therefore you can retain your current residence passport and obtain a New Zealand passport. Each country has its own Immigration policy for which it is safer to check with your own country of citizenship for dual-nationality, as this right must be reciprocal for both the countries.
