CANADIAN IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT TO REDUCE BACKLOG OF VISA APPLICATIONS

Canadian immigration plans to reduce the pending backlog of visa applications and will reject almost 2,80,000 applications that are kept on hold with the Immigration department, who have applied for their  Canadian Residence visa  before 2008. The applications will be returned and over $130 million worth of fees will also be refunded as the government aims to decrease the substantial backlog that has been waiting to be processed by the Immigration department.

The Canadian Government has advised applicants to either re-apply under the new rules or apply through one of the country’s Provincial Nominee Programs. Canadian immigration also wants to set more emphasis on young immigrants who are fluent in English or French and whose educational credentials are best matched to getting the jobs in Canada.

The Finance Minister, Jim Flaherty has advised “Canada risks losing the global talent competition for the world's best and brightest as potential immigrants choose to take their skills to other countries with more responsive immigration systems rather than remain in the queue to have their applications processed in Canada".  Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has stated his intention to reform the Canadian immigration system to be more effective in filling Labour gaps.

The Opposition has already voiced concerns about the reforms, saying that there requirements to be a more true approach to the issue that better takes into account immigrants long-term goals to bring over their families.

Immigration lawyers have also voiced their condemnation of the plan, claiming that it demoralize the time and effort that applicants put into applying for Canadian visas.   The decision to closing the files that have been put on hold prior to 2008 will hurt Canada's reputation worldwide. The People around the world will not trust the system of immigration in Canada and that's going to affect the reputation of Canada and inturn it is going to interrupt the quality of immigrants wanting to come to Canada.

The proposed rule would have to be passed at the Parliament before the rule can be brought into effect. The Immigration Bar is also looking at legal remedy and  hope the class action will save all the applications.
